Humans typically go through THREE STAGES each night, each lasting about 90 minutes. During these cycles, our brains go through different stages of sleep, including core sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

1. Core sleep refers to the deep, REM sleep that our bodies need to function properly. It’s during this stage of sleep that our brain processes memories and emotions, and our muscles repair themselves. Without enough core sleep, we may experience fatigue, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. 

2. REM sleep is a stage of sleep where our brains become more active and we experience vivid dreams. It is important for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. However, it is not the only stage of sleep that matters. Non-REM sleep also plays a crucial role in restoring our bodies and minds. In fact, deep sleep, which occurs during non-REM stages, is essential for physical recovery and immune function. So, while REM sleep may get more attention, it is important to prioritize all stages of sleep for optimal health.

3. Deep sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep, is a crucial stage of the sleep cycle that typically occurs during the first half of the night. During this stage, your brain waves slow down significantly, and your body enters a state of complete relaxation. Deep sleep is important for physical restoration and repair, as well as for memory consolidation and learning. It is also essential for regulating hormones, such as growth hormone and cortisol, which play a role in metabolism and stress response. Unfortunately, many people struggle to get enough deep sleep due to factors such as stress, caffeine consumption, or sleep disorders like sleep apnea. To improve your deep sleep quality, try practicing relaxation techniques before bed, avoiding caffeine in the afternoon and evening, and creating a comfortable sleeping environment that is cool, dark, and quiet. By prioritizing deep sleep and making positive changes to your sleep habits, you can reap the many benefits of this essential stage of the sleep cycle.
