Dietary Guidelines for intake of wine

One drink is defined as:

  • 12 ounces (355 milliliters) of beer
  • 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine
  • 1.5 ounces (44 milliliters) of 40% of alcohol

Red wine moderation drink is

  • Up to one drink a day for women of all ages.
  • Up to one drink a day for men older than age 65.
  • Up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger. The limit for men is higher because men generally weigh more than women and have more of an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol.

Cardiovascular health

Antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols may help protect the lining of blood vessels in the heart.Resveratrol in wine might help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and prevent blood clots.

Red and purple grape juices may have some of the same heart-healthy benefits of red wine.

Brain damage after stroke

2015 reviewTrusted Source reported that resveratrol might help protect against secondary brain damage after a stroke or central nervous system injury. This is due to its positive effects on inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell death.

However, studies at PubMed Central showed it is because of the effects of resveratrol rather than red wine. 

Erectile dysfunction

 “Impotence ‘helped by red wine’, British scientists find,” said the Evening Standard. The Daily Mail said: “Red wine and fruit are the new Viagra.”Consuming blueberries and red wine regularly can reduce the risk of impotence in middle-aged men

study also found that polyphenols, which are found in red wine, can decrease instances of erectile dysfunction by 14%.

Red wine stimulates sex

The study found having higher level of flavonoids in the diet was similarly effective in cutting the risk of erectile dysfunction as regular physical activity (the equivalent of two to five hours of walking a week). Exercise is already known to cut the risk of erectile dysfunction. The combination of flavonoids and regular exercise cut the risk of erectile dysfunction by 21 per cent.

Diabetes

Most cases of the disease are type 2 diabetes — a condition in which the body doesn’t make enough insulin, uses insulin incorrectly, or both. This can cause high levels of sugar in the blood.

According to the American Diabetes Association, drinking red wine — or any alcoholic beverage — can lower blood sugar for up to 24 hours. There is evidence that type 2 diabetes is less prevalent among moderate drinkers, 

sexual experience

Several studies have found that of all the alcoholic beverages you can have before sex, red wine is the only one that can actually enhance and improve your sexual experience. 

One study, for example, found that red wine in moderation can boost your testosterone, a hormone that can increase your sexual desire. Red wine increases blood flow to women’s erogenous zones and could increase lubrication.

Cancer

Some research indicates that drinking red wine in moderation could reduce the risk of certain cancers. However, drinking alcohol/red wine heavily over time can cause certain cancers.

2019 studyTrusted Source reported that males who drank alcohol had a slightly lower risk of lethal prostate cancer and that red wine had links with a lower risk of progression to lethal disease. Effective against lung cancer as well..

visceral fat-waistline

Researchers have found that drinking wine is linked to having lower levels of visceral fat, which is associated with several health complications.

Drinking beer and spirits is linked to elevated levels of visceral fat – the harmful type of fat that is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and other health complications – whereas drinking wine shows no such association with levels of this harmful fat and may even be protective against it, depending on the type of wine consumed.

In fact, we found that drinking red wine is linked to having lower levels of visceral fat. These are some of the key takeaways of a new study that my colleagues and I recently published in the Obesity Science & Practice journal.
